Notes
Before he was president (1849-50), General Zachary Taylor was a hero of the Mexican-American War. Blockton (pop. 125) was the birthplace of Bourke Hickenlooper, Iowa's governor from 1943 to 1945, and a U.S. senator from 1945 to 1969.
Not named for Liz
Or for Lawrence or Andy.
Not named for James
Or for Swift or for Opie.
But for Zachary Taylor.
Oh, what a man!
The American troops
Were once at his command!
In Bedford, the streets are all brick
'Round the courthouse.
And just south of town
Are located the fairgrounds.
In the town that's called Gravity,
They're down to earth.
And Blockton was birthplace
Of Hickenlooper.
