Floyd County

Notes
Charles W. Hart, born in Charles City in 1872, and Charles H. Parr manufactured the first successful American tractor at the Hart-Parr Gasoline Engine Company in Charles City. They were the first to use the term "tractor." Carrie Chapman Catt, women's suffrage leader, was born in Wisconsin, but grew up in Charles City.
Floyd County was named for Sergeant Floyd
Of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The only one on the entire journey
Who needed his own mortician.
The courthouse in Charles City
Survived the tornado in Nineteen sixty-eight.
So did the colorful Charles Theatre,
But much of downtown it did not.
Charles City (it's often called Chuck Town)
Has a suspension bridge over the Cedar,
With whitewater rafting through Riverfront Park.
And it's the birthplace of Robert James Waller!
The tractor was first manufactured right here,
And this is where Mister Hart named it.
And Carrie C. Catt, she lived here as a girl.
Her home is a site you can visit.
