The U.S. has 11 counties named for Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette. Walter Chrysler worked for a time at a railroad shop in Oelwein. Montauk, just outside Clermont, was the home of William Larrabee, Iowa governor 1886-90. Upper Iowa University is in Fayette. Its sports teams are the Peacocks.

Here, tours is pronounced TARS.

Oelwein is pronounced OLE-wine.

Introducing Fayette County.

It was named for the Marquis.

A very famous Frenchman,

And on that we all agree.


The biggest town is Oelwein,

But it is not the seat.

The courts are in West Union,

With a church across the street.


Walter Chrysler lived in Oelwein.

His company made cars.

A governor lived in Clermont,

And his house has daily tours.


The little town of Fayette

Has a college of its own.

What's its conference for football?

It is called the Northern Sun.
