Jasper County

Notes
The Valle Drive-in, on the west side of Newton, is one of only five drive-in theaters left in Iowa. The Capitol Theatre, inside the Hotel Maytag building, opened in 1927. The Neil Smith National Wildlife Refuge has a herd of about 50 bison and 20 elk.
Newton was famous for washing machines,
But they don't make 'em there anymore.
Though the factory closed back in Twenty-o-seven,
There's still memories of Maytag galore.
There's the Maytag Hotel and the Fred Maytag Park,
And swimming at blue Maytag Pool.
Of course, there's blue cheese at Maytag Dairy Farm,
And concerts at Fred Maytag Bowl.
But there's way more than Maytag in Jasper, you'll find.
The Iowa Speedway is there.
A drive-in, a Trainland, an old movie house,
And a handsome courthouse on the square.
On the outskirts of l'il Prairie City you'll find
A prairie that's being restored.
Views of bison and elk and the tallgrass of old
On your visit will be your reward.
