The city of Britt, home of the Hobo Museum, has hosted the annual National Hobo Convention since 1900. Fred and August Duesenberg, born in Germany, built and repaired bicycles in Garner around 1903, before they began making automobiles. Pilot Knob has a 33-foot-tall, granite observation tower.
Sphagnum is pronounced SFAG-num, of course.
Hancock County is known for the hobos,
Who travel the country by rail.
In Britt, all the hobos are honored.
In Britt, they are not put in jail.
The county seat city of Garner
Is known as The Jewel in the Crown.
The Duesenberg brothers, they lived here,
And they fixed bicycles in the town.
There's a winery called Ninety-Nine Bottles.
It's known for its North Iowa wines.
And you can hike to the top of l'il Pilot Knob.
All you do is just follow the signs.
Near the knob, there's a bog that's called sphagnum.
It's the only such bog in the state.
The lake that it's in has a most pleasant name.
It has always been called Dead Man's Lake.
