Gene Hackman spent his sophomore year at Storm Lake High School, before dropping out and enlisting in the Marines. The Storm Lake Times won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 2017.

Buena Vista is pronounced BYOO-nuh-VIH-stah.

At the battle of Buena Vista

In the Mexican-American War,

Both sides said they won. Who did? I don't know.

I suppose they were not keeping score.

Storm Lake is the seat of the county,

On the shores of a natural lake.

The actor Gene Hackman - he briefly lived here.

And the lake's called . . . you guessed it . . . Storm Lake.

The local newspaper prints biweekly,

And it once won a Pulitzer Prize.

The Carnegie Library, now a museum,

Is named Santa's Castle, to my surprise.

There's a college called Buena Vista,

And a park with a Tree Museum.

It's right on the lake, not far from downtown,

And you don't have to pay just to see 'em.
