Notes

Henry Clay Jr. died at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War in 1847, at age 35. Dewey Readmore Books, the subject of several books, died in Spencer in 2006, at age 19.

Clay County's in northwestern Iowa.

It was named for young Henry Clay.

Not for the Great Compromiser himself,

But for Henry Junior, his son, so they say.

Spencer, on the Little Sioux River,

Has a courthouse with a handsome old dome.

There's the best county fair in the entire state,

And a library where a cat made his home.

Almost everyone's played at the Clay County Fair:

Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Wynonna.

Chubby Checker, Bob Hope, Garth and Trisha, Weird Al.

George and Tammy, Cheap Trick, and Chicago.

The kitten was left in the drop box.

They named him Dewey the Library Cat.

He was famous worldwide, from Des Moines to Japan,

For the library was his own habitat.
