Mahaska County

Notes
The Alsop and Lamberson houses (both 1951) were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The only mule cemetery in Iowa, resting place of Civil War Army mules Jennie and Becky, is at the Nelson Pioneer Farm and Museum.
Mahaska County and Oskaloosa.
These names really need explanation.
So who was Mahaska? An Iowa chief,
Who's honored nowhere else in the nation.
Oskaloosa, she was a princess, they say.
There's a town with her name out in Kansas.
Here, there's a statue of young Chief Mahaska
In the park 'cross the street from the courthouse.
The courthouse, it's grand, with red brick and stone.
There's a bandstand a hundred years old.
Two houses by Wright, a big county fair,
And a depot where beer is now sold.
Out north of downtown, there's William Penn U.
It was founded way back by some Quakers.
And not far away, there's a mule cemetery.
Two sisters, they've been there for ages.
