The 1885 courthouse was taken apart and shipped to Southern California, where it was incorporated into a new office building in 1980. The community of Carter Lake was originally on the Iowa side of the Missouri River, but a flood in 1877 redirected the river's course and left Carter Lake almost surrounded by Omaha. Jazz musician Art Farmer, actor Richard Beymer ("West Side Story"), and 1974 Miss American Rebecca Ann King were all born in Pottawattamie County.
