Monona County
Monona County
Notes
The keelboat replica is at Lewis and Clark State Park. Christian Nelson, ice cream shop owner, created the Eskimo Pie in 1920.
Monona is pronounced muh-NO-nuh.
Onawa is pronounced ON-uh-wah.
There is only one county with the name of Monona.
They says it means "beautiful valley."
Past I-29 and across the Missouri,
You'll find the fine state of Nebraski.
Lewis and Clark stopped in Monona County,
But it wasn't a county back then.
Today there's a lake and a park and a keelboat.
Not the one pulled by Meriwether's men.
In Onawa you'll see there's an old red brick courthouse.
And pizza at Iowa and Third.
But what this town's known for, wherever you go,
Is The Widest Main Street in the World.
But wait! There is more! What happened in Onawa?
You'll never guess this if you try.
This amazing event happened a century ago.
The invention of Eskimo Pie!
