Notes
Frank Gotch, born in Humboldt in 1877, was world heavyweight champion in the then-legitimate sport of professional wrestling. TV journalist Harry Reasoner was born in Dakota City in 1923 and is buried in Humboldt. The East Fork of the Des Moines River meets the Des Moines, just south of Humboldt.
Alex von Humboldt was born in Berlin.
The man was a marvelous Prussian.
He traveled the world, and he studied it all,
And was buddies with President Jefferson.
His county in Iowa is known for Frank Gotch,
The long-ago, world-famous wrestler.
And there's a town named for Thor, that mighty Norse god,
Notorious for wielding a hammer.
There's just seven hundred people in Dakota City,
Smallest county seat of the state's.
Its streets run right into the metropolis of Humboldt.
And the line, just a sign demarcates.
A college called Humboldt was here long ago.
And the birthplace of one Harry Reasoner.
There's a dragstrip nearby, and two rivers meet.
And the world's only Humota Theater.
