Robert Lucas was governor of Ohio, then the first governor of the Iowa Territory (1838-41). Piper's Grocery and Homemade Candies has been on the square in Chariton for more than 100 years. John L. Lewis, born in Lucas County, was president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1920 to 1960.
